VaynerMedia: How To Brand Pro Athletes Online

VaynerMedia

There are some amazing individuals out there who really get it when it comes to sports and social media.  Amy Martin, AJ Vaynerchuk, Gary Vaynerchuk and others really know the hottest trends when it comes to helping not only pro sports teams but also some of the top pro athletes become even bigger by using social media ninja marketing tactics.

I was fortunate enough to sit down with Aj Vaynerchuck, co-founder of VaynerMedia at their headquarters in NYC last month, and was really impressed with what they are currently doing with All-Pro safety Kerry Rhodes, the New York Jets, and some of the other sports industry clients they were working with.  Check out what AJ has to say about how to brand athletes online in the video below, and feel free to share your thoughts on how pro athletes should be using social media in the comments section.

  1. Besides his usage of Twitter, I’m curious as to how AJ is helping Kerry keep his online content fresh, engaging and entertaining on a daily basis, so that fans can REALLY formulate the parasocial relationship they so badly want to have with their favorite player. Could AJ shed some additional light on what’s being done to keep his virtual life every bit as healthy and vibrant as his physical life is?

    Thanks!

Kerry Rhodes isn’t an all-pro. He should have been a few years ago, but didn’t make the Pro Bowl.

As far as athletes’ use of social media, I think it’s unnecessary, but to each their own. If they choose to use new media like Twitter and Facebook, they should be cognizant of the way they represent themselves (as should people in general). Far too often, these athletes, who are public figures, accomplish nothing but making themselves look unintelligent and immature with their posts and pictures on these sites.
