2012 Marks Fifth Consecutive Season Of Attendance Declines For Penn State Football

Ever since 2007, the Penn State football program has seen a drop in attendance at Beaver Stadium.

In 2012, the Nittany Lions averaged close to 97,000 fans per game whereas five seasons ago, the home attendance averaged 108, 917.

But the surprising part of that Penn State football statistic?

The lack of ticket sales might not solely be a function of the sexual abuse scandal involving former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, and the inactions by the Penn State University administration along with the late, Joe Paterno.

Penn State Football Experiencing Empty Seats

According to ESPN’s Sports Business Reporter, Darren Rovell, donation requirements that were established prior to the 2011 season weren’t really well-received by Penn State football fans. This season, the athletic department announced it wouldn’t increase season ticket prices or donation levels for the 2013 season.

Despite the continual drops in attendance, Penn State football will finish fifth in the country in average attendance.
