The Senior Bowl just one upped every digital department in the country — both collegiately and professionally — with its recent inovation of incorporating social media in sports.
The social media team associated with the post-season college football exhibition game recently announced last Wednesday nine of the players chosen to participate in the contest via Twitter.
Senior Bowl Sales and Marketing Director, Chris Morgan, mentioned that the change in announcing players’ selection for the game on Jan. 26, 2013, was a sign of the increasing ways to use social media in sports.
“When we send an invitation to a player now, they tweet it,” Morgan said to AL.com. “Then, their sports-information director wants to put out a release about it. We got together and said, ‘Hey, why don’t we use it.’ “
When a player was invited to the Senior Bowl, his invitation included an exclusive code, so the player could just accept the request online. Each player’s early announcement included either a prospect profile done by Senior Bowl Executive Director, Phil Savage, or the player’s biography on his college team’s website.
“So the people who follow us not only were finding out who has been invited,” Morgan said, “but they were finding out as much information on a player as an NFL personnel director would get. Our goal all along is we want our fans and the people who come to see these players in Mobile to know everything they can about them.”
Today, the Senior Bowl plans to release more names of players who have accepted their invitation to participate in the game in Mobile, Ala.
