The single most-powerful mental exercise for achieving sports career success is visualization.
This is how Harvey Mackay, author of the classic, best-selling business book, Swim With The Sharks, describes visualization:

“I came to realize that fantasizing, projecting yourself into successful situations, is one of the most powerful means there is to achieve personal goals.”

So, how do you do it? You start with the end in mind.

Thanks to a friend, I got to catch a hockey game live at the arena earlier this week. Other than the game itself, (the Canucks won, naturally) what interested me the most were the intermissions. Sure there were the usual bunch who went out for their restroom runs and beer refills, but there was also a fair amount of folks who sat and waited for their team to come back on. The arena screens were busy plugging away with out of town scoreboards and a series of paid advertisements. Down on the ice, each period intermission featured a different sponsored event.

However, of the people that hung around for these festivities, I noticed that most of them did not pay attention to all the flashy events in front of them. Instead, they were typing away on their phones. Indeed, there has been an eyeball shift in sports arenas. The smarter sports teams have tried to get ahead by creating team mobile apps but I believe that’s simply the tip of the iceberg. As advertisers and sponsors shift their money to where the eyeballs are at, mobile in sports arenas is definitely something to pay attention to in the coming year. If you work for a sports arena, do you have a mobile solution in plan? Let me know in the comments below!

About Sam Chan

Sam is the community manager of Sports Networker and the Sports Executive Association. He is passionate in all things sports, mobile, and social media. His dream is for the Vancouver Canucks to win a Stanley Cup in his lifetime, although so far, its looking kind of bleak. In the past, he worked with BlackBerry and helped relaunch their Business-to-Business network. With his experience there, he can probably help you change your ringtone, maybe. When he finds time (never), he also writes infrequently at his personal blog. If you would like to talk sports, write a guest post for us, or argue about why iPhone > BlackBerry, you can find him on Twitter, Facebook or email.

Sports agent Scott Norton represents some of the top players and prospects in the National Hockey League today including current Los Angeles Kings captain and 2010 U.S. Olympian Dustin Brown.

While Scott is used to his clients making headlines with their on-ice play, Norton made headlines of his own for a charity campaign that he started on Twitter called ‘Make My Day Mondays‘.

I recently got to chat with Scott one on one about the movement he started, why he joined Twitter and what he sees as the future of social media use in the sports industry. Here is what he had to say: [click to continue…]

The role and compensation of a sports agent is often misunderstood by the public. A sports agent’s job is to market the athlete or the products associated with that athlete to promote the athletes career. The agent works to negotiate contracts that are in the best interest of the athlete. What we don’t see is the incredible amount of personal sacrifice it takes to acquire and manage each client.

A sports agent is available 24/7/365 for his clients. Hundreds of phone calls with players, their families, physicians, and sponsors. Countless meetings with team owners, managers, and coaches. NFL sports agents in particular spend an enormous amount of time negotiating contracts, including player injury provisions and public relations presence. Networking is a huge part of a sports agent’s daily life – it never stops.

Canadian VeggieGraduating from your undergraduate institution in April or May and want to break into the business of sports (particularly in the representation of athletes) but have no idea where to start?  Here’s a list of options.  There is no “right”  path to success, but the following list provides some insight into ways that you can better prepare yourself for the life as a sports agent and possibly get your first foot through the door.

1. Don’t Stop Learning

Have you taken the LSAT or GRE?  If not, it may be too late to take either standardized test in order to be admitted into a law school or masters program this Fall.  If you have taken one of the 2 tests, you may want to consider getting a graduate/law degree.  For one, the NFL requires that you have one if you wish to be certified by the players’ association.  But even if you just want to focus your practice on basketball, baseball, or some other sport, the knowledge, tools, and connections you will gain from a masters program or law school are very valuable in this field.  My own two cents – Go to law school and see if the school allows you to take some out-of-law classes like Sport Marketing.

Networking at the Ballpark

by |February 1st, 2010

Werner Kunz(This is a guest article by Chris Rufle)

Putting on a networking event at your venue can be beneficial for you in a few different ways.  It can give you the opportunity to sell a weak night, draw in new quality leads, and help other business executives further their businesses all at the same time.  As long as you follow a few steps to make sure you plan your event properly it can be a success.

First, pick a night. Since people are primarily coming for the networking event instead of the game, you have the opportunity to pick the date you prefer.  This gives you the ability to take one of your weaker nights and sell it while hosting a successful group outing with great potential for future leads.
