Golden Tweeter

The competition may have ended with Spain claiming the Henri Delaunay Cup, but it was Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo who scooped the title of “Golden Tweeter”.

An infographic produced by theScore.com has uncovered which players and teams were the champions of Twitter during the tournament in Poland and Ukraine. In total, nearly 12 million Euro 2012 specific tweets were sent during the tournament (mentioning either Euro 2012 or #Euro2012)

Euro2012 Sets Twitter Buzzing

  • While Ronaldo didn’t even make the final, he comfortably won the Twitter battle, attracting 268,000 mentions versus the 213,000 about Italy’s Mario Balotelli. Spain’s Fernando Torres, who won the tournament’s Golden Boot for most goals scored, had to settle for third place on Twitter with 188,000 mentions.
  • Spain was the obvious victor with the most tweets about their team throughout Euro 2012 with more than 873,000. A near second, although they were eliminated by Italy in the quarter-finals, was England with 849,000. Italy, who made it to the final only to be crushed 4-0 by Spain, finished third with 716,000 total tweets.
  • The most re-tweeted tweet around Euro 2012 didn’t come from the futbol world at all. It came from the NBA’s most social player – LeBron James (@KingJames) from the Miami Heat – with his congratulatory tweet about Spain’s Championship win. It collected more than 9,600 re-tweets and more than1,000 favorites, with a reach upwards of 8.3 million – pretty crazy considering he was just a spectator.
All in all, Euro 2012 was an incredibly social event in the sports world setting records left and right. Could this tournament be a positive indicator of how the social game will play out for the Olympics in 3 weeks? Tune in!
