Tokyo Plans To Retrofit Buildings For 2020 Olympics

Part of Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympics, retrofitting stadiumsThe last time Tokyo hosted the Olympics was in 1964.   With a promise of “careful hands”, Tokyo has once again won the right to host the Games.  The 2020 Olympics seem to be a long time away, but there is a lot of work to do.

2020 Olympics to Have “Retrofitted” Venues

Year after year, winning Olympic bids seem to multiply after the initial proposition.  For instance, China’s 2008 super-spectacular spent more than twice what it proposed in its winning bid.

Part of Tokyo’s strength in winning the bid for the 2020 Olympics was their strong public transportation system, as well as their plan to retrofit buildings for the events.  The infrastructure for Tokyo is a strong one, which seemed to pave the way for their winning bid as well.

Tokyo’s bid also includes the recycling of structures initially used for the 1964 Olympic Games.  Zaha Hadid will redesign the stadium originally built for the 1964 Games, which will be fitted with a new retractable roof and other upgrades while still utilizing the original structure of the building.  Nippon Budokan and the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium will also be used for the games and will undoubtedly see their own improvements.

Downtown Tokyo will try to squeeze in some new structures for the 2020 Olympics as well.  This is part of Tokyo’s plan to reduce transit times and energy consumption.  Tokyo Harbor will also get its own new set of buildings.  These new units will act as Olympic Village and will be transformed into housing afterwards.

Questions About Tokyo and The 2020 Olympics

While the bid sounds great, many have raised questions as to whether Tokyo can handle another Olympics.  The initial $5 billion bid is low.  At the same time, recession and concerns over the nuclear disaster in Fukushima have raised some red flags.

Perhaps the 2020 Olympics be as good for Tokyo as the 1964 Olympics were.  The ’64 Games were given a lot of credit for helping Japan recover from the second World War.

The video below shows part of the vision for the 2020 Games.  From the looks of it, the venues will look spectacular.  You never know, maybe the retrofitted stadiums will pay tribute to the 1964 Olympics in more than one way.  What do you think of Tokyo’s bid for the 2020 Olympics?
