3 Keys to Launching Your Sports Career

Launching Your Sports CareerWhen it comes to launching your sports career, one of the biggest challenges you’ll face is knowing how to begin the career-launching process. To help you with that, I’ve outlined three keys to your success.

  1. Develop a Game Plan
  2. Schedule Time to Execute the Plan
  3. Make a Commitment to Stick With It

Develop a Game Plan

Your game plan shouldn’t be complicated. Make it simple. Start with this: A) What are you great at? and B) Who will pay you for doing it? When you figure out those two things, the rest is just an exercise in self-marketing.

If you’re having difficulty with those first two questions, or maybe you’re not sure how to market yourself for a job in sports, don’t worry. You’re not alone. I can help you.

Schedule Time to Execute the Plan

Not scheduling time to execute a career plan is where many people drop the ball. They know what they need to do, but instead, they procrastinate. They’re “too busy” and just don’t get around to it. Let me tell you something. If you don’t schedule time to work on your game plan, you’ll never get around to doing it.

Like the old saying goes, “Plan your work. And work your plan.” You need at least three days a week to execute your plan. With an hour or two each of those days. I find that the best times are either first thing in the morning, or last thing before bed. Pick one.

Make a Commitment to Stick With It

If you think about it, all you have to do is convince one company in sports to hire you. You can hear the word, “No” a thousand times, but all you need is one, “Yes” and you’re in business! Always remember that. Especially when you start feeling like you’re not getting anywhere.

I can promise you this. If you have a solid plan in place, and you schedule time to work on it, and you’re willing to make a commitment to stick with it, you will succeed. It’s that simple. (This is assuming that you can add value to a sports-related company and you know how to market yourself to those companies.)
