Today I want to share a personal story that happened to me last week. Hopefully it will help you to avoid a very common situation: feeling stress while doing what you love. Yes my friend, this can happen…
I will tell you how I realized that and what I have learned from a simple mistake (that cost me part of my vacation).
How To Avoid Stress While Doing What You Love
Picture this: an entire week in an incredible beautiful island in Brazil. Sunshine, white sand and your loved ones enjoying family time together. There I was, at Ihabela, with my husband and his 2 kids.
Ihabela means “beautiful island” in Portuguese. Today’s photos are from my camera. I want to share them here, so you can also enjoy the view.
My husband and I were hoping to taking the kids scuba diving with us. And they were anxious for the new experience because they heard so many stories from us about how amazing and colorful is life under water.
Scuba diving is one of my favorite activities. I know, I know… I say that about several sports and, honestly, it is true. I have experienced night dives, drift dives, caves and unfortunately less sharks that I would like to have seen (love them!)
We were really close to the shore, so no need for a boat. The plan was just to submerge 6 or 7 meters with the kids, so they could see this new world in a safe way. The whole group went under water. Except one person: me.
I was stuck on the surface. Blocked. Feeling stressed while doing something I deeply love. That hit me hard. And made me think.
After trying to overcome the block with no success, I told my husband and the other 2 divers to go ahead and enjoy the experience with the kids.
I grabbed a floating device and stayed alone at the surface, just staring down to the fishes passing by. I was feeling so frustrated. And I took the time to think about what just happened.
Planning The Breaks Is Key To Beat Stress
I had a very busy year in 2013. I wrote my first book, launched my website, started writing for Sports Networker and had an intense year at the office. The whole time I was working on things I am passionate about.
So what was the problem? No reason for stress, right?
My mistake was not properly planning the breaks.
While floating alone in Ilhabela I understood that. As I was always entertained with things that I love, and I put full energy on great projects, I didn’t realize that I was not planning the breaks.
I felt like an athlete that doesn’t plan the training sessions.
When preparing for a marathon, you need to intercalate the days with different paces and distances. Just at the end, close to the race day, you will run 30 km in a row. I was running 30 km daily and enjoying the view.
I was having so much fun with my projects I ignored that I am afraid to fly.
In order to visit 2 places in Brazil, intercalated with a business trip in the middle of the vacations agenda, I planned 8 flights in less than 30 days. That was too much for me, to start 2014 like that, after a very busy 2013.
I learned the lesson. It is possible to feel stressed, even if most of the time you are doing what you love. Going full speed for 11 months and not properly planning the breaks kept me away from doing something I enjoy: scuba diving with my family.
From now on, the same passion I put on my projects, I will put on planning the breaks. So I can enjoy the entire year, in different paces but always focused on finishing the race, feeling great.
