The sports industry offers thousands of opportunities to work abroad. As an employee you can apply for positions in other countries as well as domestically. In fact, you should be encouraged to do that. The biggest companies usually have websites where you can search for positions all over the world.

If you are willing to move abroad, you can increase your chances to land a dream job in the sports industry by applying to positions in other countries. I can tell you from experience that moving into a different country is awesome. Everyday you learn something new and you find skills you didn’t know you had.

How Do You Know If You Should Work Abroad?

I want to share 3 tips to help you when thinking about taking a job offer to work abroad. You must enjoy the experience of living abroad otherwise it is not worth it.

1. New position = More Knowledge?

A company wants to hire you due to what you can deliver through your current experience.

But what will you learn that is helpful for your professional development?

For a moment forget the experience of being in a new country and just focus on the position itself, like if you were stay in the same country.

A good opportunity is the one that will bring you more knowledge and will make real difference for your career in the future. Living abroad will always give you the opportunity to be in contact to a different culture, maybe speak a new language, be independent and make new friends.

I recommend thinking beyond that. What can you learn from the new team? What can you learn from the new job environment? Will you be in contact with new processes, new systems? Which of your current skills can you improve on?

I have worked for companies focused on product development and for companies focused on marketing. Even working for different brands but in similar positions, the environment was totally different. I had the opportunity to learn from it.

Do this exercise. Focus on the job itself and write down what you will learn. The list should make you smile and run to the airport.

There are plenty of things to think about if you want to work abroad.2. Cost of Living: Ask Questions And Compare

Living abroad could mean learning a new currency and a different cost of living. You cannot just use an exchange rate to evaluate the purchase power behind a new salary.

There are a lot of websites offering comparisons between 2 countries. You can input the detailed cost of living in your present country and the website will show you how much you would need to live the same way in the new country.

Besides that, ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions you want until you clarify all your doubts. Ask questions to HR, to locals and to foreigners living in the country you are planning to live in.

A practical example: Brazil is receiving a lot of attention from people willing to work in sports, due to the World Cup and Olympic Games. Let’s say you want to move to Brazil and you have the money to buy a car. What about the insurance and annual taxes? Once a year you pay up to 4% of your car value as taxes in Brazil and car insurance is expensive. If you don’t ask questions, you will have this kind of surprise that seriously affects your savings.

Asking for detailed information will save you from future headaches, extra expenses and will make your life much easier. Nothing should stop you from enjoying your dream job in sports.

3. Evaluate The Benefits

Premium sport brands usually offer very good benefits and pay the visa for people willing to live abroad. It is also important to check the following:

Home leave allowance: Flight tickets once a year to travel to your home country for you and your family (spouse and kids). In case this is not part of the offer, make sure you can afford it with your salary.

Health insurance: You need to be sure that you will be ok in case of emergency. It is not fun being in a foreign country and finding out that the best hospitals are not included on your insurance policy.

Car: Depending on where you are planning to move to, you will have to buy a car. Public transport in Europe is totally different from Latin America and totally different from North America.

Some companies offer a certain amount of money to support you buying a car. Or they offer plans to facilitate the payment, discounting monthly fees on the pay roll. In case there is no benefit from the employer and a car is necessary, make sure that you will be able to buy one with your salary. In some countries, banks just give credit for foreigners after 2 years living in the country.

It is important to plan the highest expenses before accepting the job. These are just a few very important ones.
