NBA Will Allow Live Streaming Of Local Market Games

NBA Game StreamingIt appears one of the big four sports in the United States has taken it upon themselves to promote steaming of local market games.

In a rather unselfish move, the NBA has made the decision to allow just that.  This move is not only a fan-friendly one, but one that could reach a wider demographic for the league and advertisers alike.

Streaming your local market NBA team is a reality

In a recent article, it was mentioned that the FCC is looking into whether or not the sports blackout rule is still in the best interest of the consumer.  It appears we have quickly continued right past that issue and are pushing into the future.

According to Sports Business Journal:

The league is finalizing TV Everywhere deals with Fox Sports Media Group and NBC Sports Group, the country’s two biggest owners of regional sports networks. Other RSNs, such as Root Sports, MSG, Time Warner Cable Sports, and Altitude Sports and Entertainment, are expected to offer live in-market streaming later this season.

The agreements break a six-year logjam that prevented viewers from watching their hometown teams on their computers or handsets locally. The frustrating negotiations also caused industry executives to question the viability of such a service, even as national TV channels were profiting from their own streaming services.

This deal is said to allow cable subscribers that already get Fox Sportsnet or Comcast Sportsnet to be able to log on and watch games on their computers or mobile devices.  As of now, 24 of the 30 teams will be covered by the two networks, with Fox having 16 teams to its name and Comcast having eight.  The rest of the league is expected to sign deals by the end of the season.

In all, the deal will cost the NBA a little bit of money and run through the 2015-2016 season.  Streaming is a way to please fans of a younger demographic and the NBA knows it.  So why not?
