Redskins Rule: How Football Games Determine The Presidential Election

Redskins Rule

Of all teams to predict the presidential election, it’s strangely, the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins Rule goes something like this: if the Redskins win their last home game before Election Day, then the party in power holds on to the White House. However, if the Redskins lose, the opposing party takes over.

You’re probably thinking that this has happened just a handful of times, but actually, it’s been spot on almost 100% of the time since 1940.

So, with Washington losing 21-13 this past Sunday to Carolina on its home turf, it looks as though Mitt Romney will become the next President of the United States, according to the Redskins Rule.

Quirky Redskins Rule Predicts Who Will Take Office In D.C.

Since 1940, the Redskins have won nine times before Election Day, with the incumbent party being 9-0 during that time period. On the flip side,  the nine times the Redskins lost, the party out of power is almost as perfect (8-1).

The only loss was the 2004 presidential election where George W. Bush defeated John Kerry despite the Green Bay Packers defeating the Redskins.
