How Benchwarmer, Mark Titus, Turned a Hobby into a Career

Mark Titus

We always say we want to work for a company in the sports industry. And we spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to get our foot in the door at those companies, send them our resume and portfolio, network with those that may already work there.

Or we could just use our own personal lives as our ticket into the sports industry!

Mark Titus: Basketball Player/Blogger to Published Author Extraordinaire

That’s exactly what Mark Titus has done.  Mark has gone from a Ohio State University Men’s Basketball player and perennial Benchwarmer, to fan favorite, to blogger with thousands of followers, to contributing writer on the front page of the hot and up and coming sports website by Bill Simmons, Grantland. Now Titus can add being a published author to the list, with a brand new book titled “Don’t Put Me In Coach” that is sure to climb the charts in the coming months!

Mark Titus turned a hobby into a career and he is doing what many of us want to do.  He took his life and made a story out of it.  His story was interesting, he captivated us, he genuinely enjoys who he is and can laugh and have fun with it, and he has made his passion his career all on his own terms!

Not exactly a Benchwarmer…in his youth

Mark Titus came to Ohio State from Brownsburg HS in Indiana where Gordon Hayward now with the Utah Jazz went and Mark played AAU ball with Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Dequan Cook, and Josh McRoberts.  Who all reside in the NBA.

But when arriving at OSU he wound up walking on to the OSU Men’s Basketball Team and that is really where his journey could have started and eventually ended.  Just another former great high school basketball player, who went to OSU and have a blast being apart of the Men’s Basketball team, graduate, and move on to some 9 to 5 job.

NOT MARK TITUS.

This kid was different.  He was funny.  He was engaging.  He had passion. And it turns out he was and is a great writer and had some behind the scenes hilarious stories that could only be found by being part of the OSU Men’s Basketball Team.

Club Trillion

Mark became a blogger.  His Blog “Club Trillion” was named for his stat line when he did get that rare opportunity to play in a game. The name of his blog was clever in its own.  Get it 1,000,000,000,000.  One minute played and all zeros for points, rebounds, assists, etc because it was the end of the game and they just held onto the ball when victory was imminent.

So Mark began to write this BLOG.  Which is inactive now with all of his work on his book and for Grantland.  But it was hilarious and it caught fire immediately throughout the Columbus community, The Ohio State University Student Population, and the college basketball world across the nation. He even dared to poke fun at teammate Evan Turner and coined him “The Villain”.

Mark TitusClub Trillion continued to grow.  His posts grew funnier, more widespread, and gained national traction.  OSU students adored him and local Columbus Ohio T-Shirt company HOMAGE made the “Club Tril” T-Shirt which was bought by over 50% of the OSU student section!  The shirts were a HIT and Mark Titus’s legend continued to grow.  Walk into any OSU sports bar and game and you are bound to see someone still rocking one of these.  In fact look at how many students rocked these shirts and still do!

How Mark Titus got to National Celebrity/Rockstar Status

Titus did two things in particular that put him on the map. And these two daring/funny things are examples of what we are too often scared to do but need to do because that ultimately is what gets you noticed and makes you unique.

1) Mark Titus declared early for the NBA Draft!   This simple but hilarious manuever gained him national attention and infuriated NBA Commissioner David Stern to the point that he made Mark Titus come out and withdraw his name from the draft.  Mark swung for the fences and hit a GRAND SLAM!  David Stern’s attention is a hard thing to garner as a benchwarmer at OSU.  Mark did it in one blog post.

2) Mark Titus became the RAINMAKER!  This cleverly done youtube video by Mark Titus has received over 400,000 youtube hits.

The End or The Beginning?

Mark Titus ended his OSU Basketball career with an emotional Senior Day when being honored before the game.  It showed his true passion and love for what he had done at Ohio State. While it was an end to one era for Mark it was simply the beginning of another.

It was a wild ride to the top of the sports industry for Mark.  His new book has received many good reviews and a few questionable ones but who cares…people will always find something to put holes through…but those are the people who don’t have the nerves to do what Mark did!  I am looking forward to reading his book in the coming weeks and I know this is not the last we have heard of Mark Titus.

So remember every day when you are out there searching for companies and looking at the past and over analyzing and worrying about what may happen in the future, you may be missing out in enjoying what a beautiful moment the PRESENT is.

And if you look hard enough you may just realize your present life has such a great story to tell that you can be the next CLUB TRIL.  The next one is out there somewhere.

KUDOS TO MARK TITUS AND ALL THOSE WHO LIVE LIFE LIKE HIM!
