Sochi Olympics Cracks Down On Journalists Using Social Media

Sochi Olympics TicketsIt has been seen before at the London Olympics: social media crackdowns.

Athletes and accredited persons were able to share their experience on social media platforms.  But this came along with a list of guidelines to follow.

In the name of the Games, the Sochi Olympics may be cracking down even harder.

For example, the following is stated in the rules for the London Games:

“Accredited media may freely utilize social media platforms for bona fide reporting purposes. Photos taken by accredited photographers may be published for editorial purposes on social media platforms in accordance with the Photographers Undertaking. All other provisions of these Guidelines apply.”

With that in mind, take a look at what the Sochi Olympics have planned.

Sochi Olympics Goes Strict

Reporting at the 2014 Sochi Olympics has undoubtedly upped the ante.  It has been reported that print journalists that use social media to capture part of the Games may immediately lose their accreditation.  Max Seddon reported Monday in BuzzFeed:

Vasily Konov, head of the state-run R-Sport news agency, which controls accreditation at February’s games, told a seminar for sports journalists on Friday that print reporters using any sort of multimedia would be “considered a serious violation and lead to their accreditation being canceled,” several Russian outlets reported. Only journalists with professional equipment and special badges will be allowed to do so.

That sounds pretty serious for those reporting on the Sochi Olympics, but it doesn’t stop there.  Non-journalists – spectators and athletes for example – that are in attendance may use social media to share their Olympic experiences.  But while doing so, activity may be monitored.  Shaun Walker reported in The Guardian:

Athletes and spectators attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February will face some of the most invasive and systematic spying and surveillance in the history of the Games, documents shared with the Guardian show.

Russia’s powerful FSB security service plans to ensure that no communication by competitors or spectators goes unmonitored during the event, according to a dossier compiled by a team of Russian investigative journalists looking into preparations for the 2014 Games.

With the Sochi Olympics just around the corner, athletes and journalists alike are preparing for the Games.  Everyone just needs to remember to keep their social media use in check.
