Even cable channels, considered extreme sports-friendly by today’s standards, had trouble acquiring alternative sports programming a generation ago.

The social media explosion has changed everything. Nowadays, extreme sports enthusiasts can receive real-time updates from their favorite athletes and organizations thanks to outlets like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And that sure beats waiting for a monthly magazine to arrive in the mailbox. Recent technological breakthroughs have been nothing short of miraculous – just ask someone who grew up in the 70s, 80s or 90s.

However, the sheer volume of data available has a few drawbacks as well. If you’re following too many people, everything starts running together. It’s the exact opposite problem of yesteryear – instead of not enough information, there’s too much today.

Wilson’s social media profile is enhanced with his own website, which includes real-time updates on all his activity. Travis Rice

Generally regarded as the king of snowboarding, Rice has recently kicked around some interesting social media content. On Twitter (@TravRice), be prepared for a decidedly edgy brand of humor, whimsical pics and some off-the-wall observations. Much like Rice’s snowboarding style, his social media presence can be a bit wild & unpredictable – but hey, what else would you expect from this most extreme of the extreme athletes? Rice has maintained a Twitter account for about 5 years now, with a thousand tweets to his name. A word of warning for parents with kids: Rice isn’t shy about using bad language; nothing too raunchy, but each parent has different standards.

Mat Hoffman

The great thing about following Hoffman on Twitter (@CondorBMX) is that you not only get a sneak peek inside Hoffman’s own routine, but you’ll also enjoy Hoffman’s retweets and favorites. He’s about as active as they come from an extreme BMX standpoint, so you’ll discover some new names and also revisit some of the sport’s most memorable moments and legendary names.

This account reminds everyone that extreme athletes can also do a world of good outside the arena of competition. Surprisingly inspirational yet still showing some playful Sheckler attitude, the foundation is one of the world’s top extreme athlete-based charities – and certainly worth your Twitter attention.

Martin Strel

So just who is Martin Strel? The name doesn’t strike most people as a household name.

Strel isn’t your typical extreme sports athlete. He doesn’t jump out of helicopters to ski down mountain slopes, and he’s never been pulled by a jet ski into murderous Hawaiian surf. Yet Strel does something equally amazing, if not more so, than those big wave surfers. The Slovenian holds several Guinness World Records for endurance swimming.

He’s done all the big rivers in the world (Mississippi, Danube, Amazon and many more), and posts some interesting expeditions on Twitter (@martinstrel). But it’s not just the incredible feats alone that make Strel a must-follow. He also posts super-scenic photos from around the world, along with some amazing videos, too. Plus, Strel swims with a purpose. His motto is, “swimming for peace, friendship and clean waters.” Follow Strel into some of the world’s majestic waters.
