One of the first posts I ever wrote for SportsNetworker was about Gilbert Arenas, the true pioneer of the social media space for professional athletes. Shaq gets the credit for being the one who led the way, because of his use of Twitter, but Gilbert was in the space first. And Gilbert was a blogger! Forget Shaq writing 140-character tweets in 2008, Gilbert was writing blog posts that consisted of hundreds if not thousands of words... two years earlier!

Anyway, this post is not about Shaq or Gilbert Arenas or anyone you've likely heard of before. This post is about Swedish professional golfer Alex Noren and minor league baseball player Matt Antonelli. Why? They're both professional athletes and outstanding bloggers. We focus so much on Facebook & Twitter as the tools athletes should be utilizing, but let's not forget the power of the blog.

Shaq gets the credit for being the one who led the way, because of his use of Twitter, but Gilbert was in the space first. And Gilbert was a blogger! Forget Shaq writing 140-character tweets in 2008, Gilbert was writing blog posts that consisted of hundreds if not thousands of words… two years earlier!

Anyway, this post is not about Shaq or Gilbert Arenas or anyone you’ve likely heard of before. This post is about Swedish professional golfer Alex Noren and minor league baseball player Matt Antonelli. Why? They’re both professional athletes and outstanding bloggers. We focus so much on Facebook & Twitter as the tools athletes should be utilizing, but let’s not forget the power of the blog.

Alex Noren (AlexNoren.com)

Alex uses his blog very much like how I would recommend a professional athlete to use his or her blog; frequent updates with lots of pictures and behind-the-scenes looks that tell the story of who Alex Noren is. He posts pictures from the course, as well as from workouts, and the clubhouse lounge, and he’s always sure to add a caption or a bit of commentary. All the posts seem to come directly from Alex.

One big criticism would be that Alex fails to interact with commenters. These are readers who feel passionately enough about him to leave their thoughts on Alex’s posts, and yet he misses the opportunity to capitalize and engage.

Matt Antonelli (MatthewAntonelli.com)

While not the prettiest of blogs design-wise, Matt does an excellent job with content. He posts regularly, using the blog almost as a journal. Matt generally posts about what is on his mind and what he’s been up to. I love the fact that he posts videos. Recently, he posted some footage of his trip to the San Diego Zoo, as well as footage from a recent Massachusetts to Arizona road trip. The content is incredibly personal and authentic, and that’s what makes it so great.

Matt also asks site visitors to “Become a Fan” with a Like Box and to “Follow Matt on Twitter” with an embedded Twitter feed. Great to see the incorporation of social media, and also to see that Matt updates both his Facebook & Twitter accounts quite frequently.

Fun Story: Recently, my boss, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Matt Antonelli had an exchange on Twitter where Gary told Matt that his brother AJ owned Matt on his fantast team. He replied, “tell @ajv I’m sorry I’ve been hurt all year…Don’t lose the faith lol.” Great stuff!

Honorable Mention: Kevin Durant (KevinDurant35.com/blog)

This is easily the best blog I’ve seen from a well-known athlete. Durant posts about once per week, and generally seems to write his own posts. He writes about basketball, of course, but also about what’s on his mind. For example, he recently posted about hip hop artist Drake’s new album as well as his thoughts on pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg. The blog isn’t perfect, but it’s the best I’ve seen from a notable pro athlete.

Advice for Athletes

Take some notes. Buy your domain name. Create a blog (use Tumblr, it’s easy). Post regularly. Be authentic. Post lots of pictures and videos. Include your social presence if you have one (if you don’t have one, get one). Give fans a behind-the-scenes experience they won’t be able to find anywhere else.

You may think you don’t have the time, but believe me, it’s smart to take the five minutes per day to post some content on a consistent basis. Why? Facebook and Twitter are great, but they are only platforms. You can make your blog your permanent home on the web.

PGA Tour Travelers Cup champion, Bubba Watson, topped a debut list of Rising Sports Stars to watch in July. Watson survived a six shot deficit and a nail biting three-way playoff to emerge the victor of the June 27 tournament and recorded his first ever win in a PGA Tour event.

Other notable athletes who made July’s Rising Sports Stars list include USA Soccer Team midfielders Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey; John Isner, who won the longest match in tennis history; and NHL’s #1 overall draft-pick Taylor Hall.

Rising Sports Stars is a new monthly list distributed by Brand Affinity Technologies (BAT) and ranks the top ten U.S. professional athletes from all major sports who experienced the greatest relative growth in popularity during the prior thirty days.

While most lists only track a single data source once or twice a year, Rising Sports Stars takes a unique approach in gauging a particular athlete’s popularity, measuring multiple data points for more than 27,000 athletes that are tracked on a daily basis.

The complete Rising Sports Stars list can be found here and people can learn when new lists go live at the start of each month by subscribing to BAT’s Twitter feed at @BATimpact.

So this week would not be complete if I went through this entire saga regarding LeBron James and did not write about him once. I know everyone is sick of hearing about it, but for some reason everyone keeps reading the tabloids and listening to the countless information put out by the media. Everyone complains about it but than he or she plays devil’s advocate and wants to learn more about it anyways. I am not sure if there was a connection with the scorching temperatures that plagued the east side of the country this week, but LeBron decided he also wanted to be part of the “heat” epidemic.

Okay LeBron is on the Heat, we get it, but South Beach was not the only thing that came out a winner in the sweepstakes for King James. This article actually has little to do with the blockbuster deal that recently took place, but rather focusing on the wise choices made by the Boys and Girls Club of America.

Now I am not exactly sure whose idea it was to get themselves involved with one another, whether being LeBron contacting the club or the club contacting LeBron, but regardless it was an amazing public relations move in which put the Boys and Girls Club of America on the map. In what was easily the biggest hype to a sports announcement this year, and maybe all time for that matter, the Boys and Girls Club of America had their name all over the scene. I understand that they were not sponsors during the hour-long special on ESPN called “The Decision,” but as a corporation I can bet money that they created more awareness for their brand than any of the other companies involved during the LeJames-anthon.

The University of Phoenix and Vitamin Water presented a solid campaign with their sponsorships, as I can actually remember seeing them during the event, but how many people can really remember that Bing, Sprite, and McDonald’s also sponsored. I was trying to keep tabs on the sponsors that appeared during the event and I still forgot about those last three. I guess Bing, Sprite, and McDonalds were like the Cavaliers, Knicks, and Nets; but hey, not everyone could come out a winner during the campaign.

When it came to the Boys and Girls Club of America and LeBron James, they were able to compliment each other well. Honestly, I think that anytime someone like the Boys and Girls Club of America can get themselves involved with such a spectacle deserves a pat on the back. Though give some credit to LeBron, as even though after his decision some people may think differently, but the man is no idiot. Call it great public relations by the James Camp, call it a scapegoat so those the New York and Cleveland communities might show some remorse, or call it a man trying to help out an organization, regardless, it increased the brand of the Boys and Girls Club of America and it made LeBron look like less of a villain for hosting his announcement live on television.

LeBron was going to come out of the situation hated by numerous cities regardless of his decision, but the Boys and Girls Club of America knew they were going to come out a winner no matter what.

If you don’t know about Stephen Strasburg, let me introduce you. Strasburg is a starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals. He was the number one pick in the MLB Draft last year and made his major league debut earlier this week: 7 innings, 4 hits, 2 earned runs… and 14 strikeouts! Quite the impressive entry into Major League Baseball. Strasburg is a budding superstar. He’s been talked about for the last several years in baseball’s inner circles. His fastball approaches 100 miles-per-hour and moves dramatically. His curveball is about twenty miles per hour slower than his fastball and has been known to defy gravity. Strasburg is the real deal.

Strasburg & Social Media

I see a great opportunity for Strasburg to really change the game for Major League Baseball when it comes to social media. None of the league’s superstars have truly embraced Facebook or Twitter (the league’s best social media user is Nick Swisher, but hard to call him a superstar). Other leagues have big-time players using social media, but the MLB does not.

There is a ton of hype around Strasburg, and while he hasn’t proven himself at the major league level (one start isn’t enough), he has the potential to be a huge superstar. Should Strasburg adopt social media and do it the right way (call me!) he would unquestionably collect a massive amount of followers, and perhaps inspire others in the league to join as well. Also, his usage could prompt other up-and-coming players to do the same, creating a trend in the game of baseball.

Part of the reason we have seen a rush of professional athletes join Twitter in the past year is because of Shaq’s early success. They saw his numbers explode and, even if they didn’t know what Twitter was or why it mattered, they wanted to join. I really believe that Strasburg’s presence could convince other MLB’ers to join as well. Obviously, Strasburg’s number 1 concern is baseball, but you’d be surprised what he could achieve with 20 minutes per day.

Nationals Need to “Capitol”ize (Get it?)

Further, I see another fantastic opportunity, for the Washington Nationals to capitalize on Strasburg’s hype. The Nationals (formerly known as the Montreal Expos) are one of the MLB’s worst teams. However, they have a lot of young talent, headlined by Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg’s first start was only the second sell-out of the season. You can bet that as long as this kid continues to pitch the way he showed us he can, every one of his home starts for the foreseeable future will be a sell-out as well (Don’t believe me? The Indians have seen an increase in ticket sales just because Strasburg is coming to town. Yeah, he’s that kind of player).

From a pure branding/marketing angle, the Nationals need to go all out to make every Strasburg home start an experience. These are the rare occasions when the Nats can capitalize on a full stadium, blast the fans with messaging, discounts, and giveaways. Find ways to give fans reason to believe Nats games are worth attending even when Strasburg isn’t pitching.

A Missed Opportunity

The night of Strasburg’s first start, the chatter & buzz on the Internet, particularly Twitter, was insane (he was a trending topic until the following day). You didn’t need to be watching the game in order to know exactly what he was doing. Had Strasburg been present on social media, or had the Washington Nationals engaged with anyone and everyone talking about Strasburg and/or run a social media campaign around Strasburg’s first start, all would have seen a tremendous impact. While Strasburg & the Nationals got a lot of social media buzz from his first start, none of those messages were engaged with. Sure, the Nationals asked people to tell them what they thought, but they didn’t @reply any of them. Sure, the Nationals offered up a signed ball from the game, but they’re just running an auction through MLB.com. Time to get more engaging and more creative.

Closing it Out

The bottom line is this: Steven Strasburg is a phenomenal pitcher and is on his way to being a superstar professional athlete.

But is it enough anymore just to be great on the field? Fans now have the opportunity to connect with their favorite athletes like never before, and while athletes aren’t required to be present or active on social media, it’s a bit of a disappointment for fans when they’re not. Further, Strasburg is a monster personal brand right now, and in this day and age, brands can’t afford not to be on social media.

The Nationals need to be creative, engaging, and take this opportunity as a chance to knock it out of the park (sorry, had to do it). That’s it, plain and simple. No more missed opportunities.

As a Phillies fan, I’m some mix of excited and terrified that my team will face Strasburg several times per year for the foreseeable future. He has unbelievable “stuff” and his potential to dominate this league for a long time is great. What do you think of Strasburg in general? Do you think he could change the dynamic between the game of baseball and social media? Let’s continue to conversation below.

When you think of brand positioning for Apple Inc. (Public, NASDAQ:AAPL) a few words come to mind: creative, quality, dynamic design and secretive.

In light of the last definition, most all information that has any hint of a new product, design or circuitry hits every mode of media within minutes. Apple’s PR department has one of the easiest, most rewarding jobs in the industry because the brand has evangelists that hang on the company’s every word, official or otherwise. Media of every kind look for an edge when it comes to reporting about the company’s latest product. It’s also been rumored that Apple leaks information to the media in an effort to set off the buzz meter about a product. It works every time.

There is a brand parallel to Apple in professional sports. His name is Brett Favre.

Favre’s seeming indecision about whether to return to the National Football League for the last three seasons that has gone late into the summers, along with his advanced football age and injuries have created a National Enquirer-type watch on everything he does. There seem to be cameras and “news” reports of everything from his lawn-mowing chores to chats he has with his alma mater’s baseball team. Is all of this news? No. Do people click on links or tune into their favorite sports shows when they see or hear anything that highlights Favre’s name? Yes.

Favre is not someone who became a celebrity for being a celebrity. He’s a three-time AP Most Valuable Player (1995, ’96 and ’97), played in two Super Bowls, five NFC Championship games and has led teams to eight division title rounds. He holds every major NFL record that exists and his adventurous style of play through the years has only added to the mystique.

Whether you like the fascination attached to Apple or Favre is your choice. The fact is that when either one of these brands makes a move, people take notice in droves.

From a personal standpoint, I’d love to have a brand built on such fan bases. You’ll never satisfy everyone, as it is with life, but you have a winner when you can generate buzz from a whisper.

Gentlemen,

It’s almost here. Big weekend. Life-changing weekend for you and your families.

You are going to hear a lot of things throughout the course of the next several days leading up to the draft, straight through the completion of your first season. Sometime between Thursday and Saturday you may hear your name called. You may not. You may go in the early rounds. You may not go at all.

You will hear a lot of things about yourself in the media, some positive, some less than favorable. Expectations. Hype. Where you’ll go in the draft. Why you’re falling to the later rounds and the reasons for it. Opinions. Criticisms.

Fans will cheer with your selection. Fans will boo with your selection. You will hear sports pundits across the nation declaring you are everything from the next greatest whatever to, “I cannot understand why they drafted an unproven commodity with that pick.” And best believe you’re going to hear Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay face off at length on ESPN arguing the finer points of when you should/if you should/and where you should go in the draft.

Media and front offices alike will talk about your personality, your skill set, your background, your life, your college career, your NFL expectations, and your character. That’s right. Your CHARACTER?!? Let’s stop here for a moment, because this is perhaps THE most important and defining aspect of what opportunities will await you both during and after your playing days.

Issues surrounding character and personal conduct have the potential to derail a promising career, and in Roger Goodell’s NFL, it is no secret what will happen to you if you violate the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy. Across the sports world, we have all witnessed how the mighty have fallen due to poor decision making and bad crisis management. So please understand, your success is not entirely predicated on your ability to make plays. It ultimately comes down to what type of person you are both on and off the field and you need to understand what is expected of you.

Like it or not, agree with it or not, you are a role model to others. Your family, your friends, and children in this country and around the world look to elite athletes because of the special talent you have. So remember, to whom much is given, much is expected. That is reality and you have to accept it.

It’s fine to take care of your families and yourself, but be smart about it.

As you transition into your new life and lifestyle, keep the following in mind:

1. Your talent makes you special on the field but it does not make you better than other people. It will afford you many luxuries, but it is not a license to “wild out.” It does not put you above the law. Your life is officially under the microscope and the world is going to watch you grow up, wait for you to screw up, and see how you will react. Look, you’re going to make mistakes. The pressure is going to be tremendous. But if you limit your mistakes to what you do on the field, what you do off of it will enhance your ability to create a post-NFL career while you are in the league.

2. Kill the entourages and eliminate ALL distractions. Don’t assign titles and give jobs to people who have no experience in this arena. I’m not saying cut your crew or cut your boys loose, but make sure they add value to the equation – YOUR equation. You are the sum of the parts here. Build a strong, solid team around you — lawyer, agent, strategic PR/communications team, marketing, financial manager, etc. Trust me, the money you will pay to have solid people in your circle of trust protecting your name and brand, and working in lockstep as a unit, is nothing compared to the amount you will lose if you screw it up.

3. Think about the financial and social mistakes made by other athletes that cost them their fortune, fame and/or freedom. Millions in lost endorsements and salary, prison sentences, financial ruin, social embarrassment, and the untold and often permanent damage to their reputations and don’t be that guy.

4. Stop focusing on the bling, the cars, the homes, the toys, the women, the excess. It’s fine to have a few things, but be smart about it. You do not want to end up like so many others before you when your playing days are over. Enjoy the moment, but start focusing on the future.

5. Understand we see this every day in our line of work and no one is immune. You see, one of the most important aspects of what we do for a living is reputation management and crisis communication. Avoid the pitfalls by being prepared with a solid plan and team in place. And remember, one of the best ways to make sure you keep your reputation intact is simple — do the right thing – all the time.

This is your career gentlemen. This is your future so take the reputation management component as seriously as the on the field aspects of your game. Prepare, focus and eliminate the distractions. You don’t mess around making sure you are prepared to play the game on the field, so don’t play games with your reputation off of it. It’s not worth losing everything you’ve worked for your entire life because it can all come crashing down in a matter of minutes.

Good luck this weekend.

Are athletes judged and dealt with more harshly for their indiscretions and blatant crimes than the Average Joe? Are they scrutinized and seen as villains under the media’s microscope in a way that’s justified by those who condemn them?

If we’re honest about it, most people thrive on public scandal and it is evidenced by the way we were glued to our televisions during the O.J. trial. Of course, other sports heroes have caught our attention with scandals of varying degrees, like Kobe Bryant, Rae Carruth, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Nate Newton, Michael Vick, Tonya Harding, Mike Tyson, and most recently, Tiger Woods.

Scandals make for good sports bar banter and wildly heated debates. Among analysts and commentators it creates juicy, on-camera airtime. When one of our sports heroes goes astray, he is often cast as a villain. His (or her) fame is perverted, and their name dragged through the mud in every conceivable way.

Since the public eye is watching, it does appear larger than life. After all, we idolize our sports heroes and expect near perfection from them. When they fall short, we (and the media) scrutinize their actions, condemn, and self-righteously sit back and pronounce judgment.

Based on the severity of the crime, a few of our fallen sports heroes deserve to be behind bars and psychologically evaluated. Others, who have had marital indiscretions and possible addictions, are like anyone else in the “real” world. They need a strong dose of counseling and support to help them on the road to recovery. They need a hand up and a strong arm of love and support.

The REAL heroes are the ones who admit they’ve fallen and can’t get up without outside help. Through ongoing therapy and accountability, they regain their sense of balance, restore damaged relationships, and get back on the course or court, or whatever the field of play may be; they re-establish themselves as the hero they once were. They’ll forever drag their personal scandal behind them, but they use it as a springboard for a stronger and more courageous future.

It’s officially opening day for Major League Baseball. The Final Four tips in Indianapolis with storybook character, Butler University, taking on hoops behemoth, Duke in the evening. In the midst of it all will be lots of talk about Sunday’s big National Football League trade of Donovan McNabb from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Washington Redskins.

Oh, and Tiger is scheduled to hold a press conference today at 2 p.m., EST at Augusta National, site of The Master’s. It will be the first time that professional golfer Tiger Woods, takes questions from the media after he admitted to multiple affairs, and watched his nearly spotless brand derail last fall.

We, the public, can speculate what Woods might say in an uncontrolled environment. The fact is, however, he chose his return to professional golf at this tournament because it has long been the most conservative and closely guarded event in sports. There’s a chance that golf reporters will ask questions about the still unqualified early morning last November during which Woods damaged his car, but if the script goes according to the last month, Woods will remain tight-lipped about what he and many consider personal issues.

From a public relations and branding standpoint, Woods will have to adjust his strategy if he plans to enjoy an accepting crowd and media contingent. Sure, the salacious, gossip media will not be credentialed for The Master’s, but because Woods didn’t come forth with answers to what happened that night and take control of his own message, there will be a group at Augusta that has made up its own mind. Even if they’re only interested in the way he swings the club after an extended layoff, people will look at Woods and wonder. Always the tunnel-visioned competitor, his emotions may be just as challenged as his ability to compete.

If I was Woods, I would look no further than fellow golf icon Arnold Palmer for advice on how to move forward as he works to repair his brand. (Of course if I were Woods, I would have handled everything differently since Day 1 of the scandal.)

Palmer basically said when asked prior to his Bay Hill Invitational this year, that Woods, who did not play, should let his guard down and open up to media in a first step toward moving forward.

Whether you think that Woods owes the public an explanation of all things personal or not, the fact is that even if he should win The Master’s this year, the questions and controversy won’t go away until he opens up and lets the garbage take hold one last time before it flushes away.

There’s no more PR strategy that I can offer that I haven’t before. Today, however, will probably be the most widely watched pre-Master’s press conference in history. What Tiger says, or doesn’t say, will likely set the tone for public discussion the rest of the week if not the PGA season.

It’s official. Tiger Woods announced on his website that he will begin his comeback from the personal mega-bogey that derailed his professional career for four months.

Ben Roethlisberger is still fighting a sexual assault charge, his second such fumble in three years.

Four University of Oregon football players have been in trouble with the law in the month.

These are just some of the dozens of professional sports figures whose off-the-field actions have affected theirs and their organizations’ reputations.

Despite the proliferation of portable recording devices and media’s unprecedented coverage, athletes and coaches who enter the public limelight because of their talents, continue to endure public humiliation because of their own poor personal decisions. It’s for that reason I want to reach out via SportsNetworker with a PR primer. It could even be looked upon as an image savior.

To anyone in the public eye – which some would argue, includes all of us in the multi-media age – I offer the following to this group with which I’ve long worked, for when they feel weak and defenseless against alluring men/women, the temptation of crime or any kind of action that maybe construed as controversy. The following tips should be read and re-read, reviewed before each competitive season and before they clean out their lockers at the end.

As we’ve learned, sports news doesn’t have an off-season.

1) Consider where you go and with whom you travel, whether it’s to the grocery store, restaurant or a nightclub, and leave controversy and miscues behind.

Why does it matter whether you hang out with your boys or Dr. Phil? You’re a new member of the Smith City Supersonics and have just signed some lucrative endorsement contracts. Your buddies from home, who have traveled to Smith City to make you “feel comfortable” in your new home have criminal records, and have no problem spending your income on illegal drugs…and using them in your home. Whether you engage in criminal activity or not, one leaked photo, one accusation suggested to a member of the media or inadvertent public outburst about your involvement with this group, and you can say goodbye to the credibility you began to build with community outreach and high-scoring performances. More than one athlete has been permanently been benched because of poor personal choices he made any time during his career.

2) Nothing can be gained by going to a bar after midnight.

Charles Davis, a former college football player at the University of Tennessee who is now an NFL analyst for FOXSports and NFL Network, recalls something one of his position coaches advised in the 1980s that remains more than true today.

“Coach had a saying, ‘only two things in life are undefeated: p**sy and alcohol. And, neither one will ever be beat!’ Guys that I played with quote it every time something rolls across the wire like it did with Ben Roethlisberger. The temptations are as old as civilization and especially when you live in the public eye, you won’t win,” Davis said.

I would add one thing to the coach’s list of things that will defeat you: firearms (especially if they’re not registered).

If you want to enjoy a couple of cocktails, do it in private, and give no one reason to produce visualsor stories of you acting unlawfully. If you need to feel the pull of a trigger, visit a certified, secured shooting range or go hunting.

3) Be honest.

This goes not only for when you get in trouble, but especially in good times. Take time to foster relationships with fans, general consumers (who may use the products you endorse) and the media. If you build a reputation as a person who is trusted, reliable and generous, chances are that if anything negative arises, a reputation’s blow will be muted and you will be given a benefit of the doubt instead of being judged guilty from the outset.

However, if photos are leaked on the Internet or stories are posted about an alleged wrongdoing, immediately own up to it. Consult with a publicist who is versed in crisis management and follow his or her advice.

The best way to find the right person is to seek referrals from people who have been there. If you know of someone who hired a crisis PR specialist who provided sensible guidance with positive results, hire her!

We live in a forgiving society, especially when it comes to sports heroes. The sooner you admit to a mistake, the sooner everyone heals and you’re hopefully forgiven. This not only benefits your conscience, but your marketability and organizations’ image. Any kind of half-story or cover-up only extends controversy and keeps your negative story in the news.

4) Don’t drink ‘n’ dial – or text, email or leave provocative voice mails.

If you’ve ever watched an episode of CSI or even contacted your local service provider about harassing calls, you know that everything is traceable. You can erase texts, but they’re always out there. The minute you hit “send,” those words are potentially accessible to media and authorities. If you’re sober, married and still want to hit “send” to the girl you flirted with at a private party you attended the night before, think about possible repercussions to your reputation and relationships with your family, organization and sponsors, not to mention how they might affect your future earnings opportunities.

5) Take control of YOUR message.

If you don’t take part in conversation about you, others will create an image for you based on what they read and hear…and it might not be pretty.

Woods’s image eroded not only because of leaks regarding his private indiscretions that went public, but the way he closed himself off to what was being said. The fact that he, nor anyone from his camp spoke or appeared immediately after the November car accident allowed the public and media to speculate, which quickly exploded into social media discussions. Rumors and discussion based on conjecture continued because he didn’t take control of the message. Whether you believe Woods owed the public an explanation or not, this story could have been muted if he was advised to take control of the message immediately.

The best example of a celebrity getting ahead and taking control of a controversy before people could misspeak is David Letterman. From a public relations standpoint, he handled the news of his personal affairs and subsequent extortion threats immediately and with candor.

The fact is, we’re all now celebrities to a degree. Embarrassing video and salacious stories are only clicks away. If you’re an athlete or coach, whether it is college or professional, you assume a greater responsibility. In addition to your own brand, you take on the image of your organization, its league, sponsors and trust of a fan base – and them in you.

It goes back to PR 101: If you don’t want the story on the front page of the Wall Street Journal … or today, on TMZ’s front page, think twice, three and four times about your actions. It will save you a lot of grief, money and work to rebuild what could have been a consistently lucrative career.

Or, as former college star and NBA player Jalen Rose posted on Twitter, Tuesday night (@jalenrose): “To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.”

*”Keep Your Putter in the Bag” is the title of a segment Steve “The Homer” True started after Woods’ troubles became public. While created in jest, it lured additional attention to his daily radio show on 540ESPN in Milwaukee.

Super Bowl XLIV is a mere memory now. Faint echoes of “Who Dat” ring in our ears. We’ve seen a Brees blow through and we’ve seen the burning Bush. For fans, the season is over and we’re wondering what to do on Sunday afternoons. We could relive the season by watching games of our favorite teams on DVD but it just doesn’t hold the same magic. We could spend our days anticipating the draft or go on a hot wing fast in defiance of another season ending. We could turn our attention to other sports but football is football.

However, the end of a season often means the end of a pro player’s football life. Often, the end comes sooner than later due to an injury or just being cut from the roster. Other players, after a long and illustrious career, decide to hang up their helmet to preserve the remaining strength of their bodies.

What happens to any one of the 1,900 players once the NFL spotlight party ends, and they’re just a “regular” person?

How do their bodies cope from the myriad of hard hits they gave and received during their career?

Does a metamorphosis take place in their attitude toward winning, or does that same intensity and self-confidence translate into the corporate or entrepreneurial world?

According to Bob LaMonte, author of Winning the NFL Way, “Within five years of leaving the league, 75% of NFL players end up either broke, divorced, or unemployed.” Sad statistic and I don’t want to believe it. But, alas, it doesn’t mean it’s not true. Many are addicted to painkillers, alcohol, or drugs, and facing bankruptcy and depression. Many players whose sole identity is wrapped up in being in the spotlight will have a difficult time adjusting to an everyday life of anonymity. One former player likens it to going from CEO, back to the mailroom.

Fred Vinson, former Cornerback for the Green Bay Packers states, “If you don’t have a strong self-identity before the NFL, you’ll have a harder time establishing one afterward.”

In 1956, to help aid the transition, the NFL established the NFL Players Association, a union to assure that the rights of players are protected. The Player Development division of each team encourages players to start businesses of their own, even during playing years. The program focuses on four primary programs: Continuing Education, Financial Education, Career Internships, and Player Assistance Services. Players are encouraged to invest and plan well for their 40-year post-football life.

For every story of post-football defeat, there are many more success stories. If you browse NFL profiles on LinkedIn, Prolebrity, or Google, you’ll see just how many former players are translating their winning attitude and work ethics into victorious combinations in business and life. The same self-confidence that helped them excel as pro players now helps them excel in their careers.

A lot of the former players I communicate with manifest that same exuberant passion for their current position in life; whether it’s financial services, non-profits, web design/SEO, or promoting their kicking school. To combat the beatings their bodies took during football, they maintain the relentless pursuit of muscular, strong bodies and healthy lifestyles. The defining difference between floundering former players and successful former players is attitude. Attitude is everything and it’s a choice we all make a million times a day…everyday.
