Robinson Cano Signs With Jay-Z’s Agency

YANKEES-articleLarge-v4New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano announced on Tuesday that he has fired Scott Boras as his agent, and has signed with the agency led by entertainment mogul Jay-Z. Boras is widely known for taking the biggest names in baseball and getting them lucrative contracts in free agency, landing him a ruthless reputation.

Cano is the first client that Jay-Z’s new agency, Roc Nation Sports, has signed. The second baseman could be the Yankees best player currently, with a career .308 batting average with 33 home runs and 192 hits in 2012. The agency is partnering with the already established Creative Artists Agency. Both the Yankees and Roc Nation Sports seem to have big plans for the future with Cano as the centerpiece.

Jay-Z is a big Yankees fan himself, frequently sporting the team’s hat, and has been involved with players in the past. Back in 2007 when Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract, Jay-Z played a significant role in convincing him to remain with the Yankees.

Cano will be represented by Brodie Van Wagenen from Creative Artists Agency. Van Wagenen has a reputation for negotiating large extension contracts between players and their current team’s, rather than try and get the most money for a client in the free agency market like Boras does. Matt Cain, Ryan Howard and Ryan Zimmerman are just a few examples of clients that Van Wagenen has represented in the past.

Cano submitted paperwork to the Major League Baseball Players Association on Tuesday to confirm the change. Players sign 12-month contracts with agents, and are allowed to switch agents at any time.
