Goal Setting to Get a Sports Job

Listen here Sonny Boy!  Set goals to achieve your dreams!

How many times have we heard Uncle Bob tell us that when we were growing up as kids?  Great advice, generally though Uncle Bob did not also provide the actionable path to how to set those goals and what those goals needed to be in order to achieve success.

My idea here today is to get you entrenched with a full on action plan of goal setting activities that will lead you to your end goal: Getting a job (hopefully a career) in your chosen field.

I am also going to assume that you are either going to be entering the professional field fresh out of high school or college OR you are contemplating a career change into a new industry, probably sports because that’s what we do on this website, and you will have no to little experience in the sports industry.

Without further ado…

1. Visualize Your Dream Scenario in Your Future Career/Job

See in your head what you want it to be.  What will make you happy?  What type of day will you be having at the new profession?  Is there a particular part of the country or world that you want to be residing in?  Figure out if you can have anything in your job visualize what it would be.  From there you need to jot it down onto your iPad or computer and begin to start moving forward.

2. Realize What is Really Important and What Deems Success for You

This isn’t what makes most people happy but it is often thought of first and foremost when they think of success.  Truth be told for myself what is really important to me is to have independence within my company, the ability to travel, having fun every day, being able to help my clients, and not dealing with a lot of drama.

There are certain positions and certain industries that lend themselves more to what I want than others.  If I wanted a flashy car I would probably sign up to sell a consumer product of some sort that I could make more money at but have no passion for and no intensity towards getting my clients results every day.

3. Find Out What Gets You Going

The simplest way to figure out a way to find a job and setting a goal to get there is to find out what truly gets you going and excited every single day.  That’s the industry you need to land in.  That’s what I like to refer to in my new book as “your own hot dog stand.” It’s your passion and calling.  Think about the times you were most excited in your life and what it revolved around.  What about it made you tick.  That’s your goal.  Find out what you get absolutely pumped up for then figure out a way you can make money at that or working in a job or career that those qualities and traits of your passion are able to be unleashed each and every day.

4. Put Deadlines on Your Goals

Without deadlines you won’t push yourself to get anywhere.  Know when you want to have X amount of interviews completed by.  Offers by.  Networking events attended by.  Webinars about industries to learn more about them done by.

You need to have end in sight or you will be great at Marco Polo, constantly treading water, and eventually you will be a “Fish Out of Water” like this GUY!

5. Shoot for the Sky, Then Also Have Goals You are Willing to Settle on

Don’t settle for trying for anything but the best.  But also have a Plan B just in case you can’t get there.  Something that will still help you land a gig that you would extremely like.  Don’t settle with a gig that would “be okay” or else you may end up with a job you HATE!

6. Don’t Listen to What Everyone Else Thinks

Of course you will take note of what your mentors or closest confidants have to say.  Just remember there are a lot of people out there with a lot to say, plenty of opinions about what you should do with your life, and no means or desire to ever back anything up.  Don’t get bottled down by them.

Stick to your plan, to your end goals, to your dreams.  Don’t make their drama part of your goals.

7. Look yourself in the mirror every day and tell the TRUTH

The only person who can hold you back is yourself.  Life is 20% of what happens to us and 80% is our attitude and reaction to what happens.  Look yourself in the mirror every single day and tell the truth to yourself: Did I do everything I could yesterday to achieve my goals?  If you didn’t try it again that day.  Don’t think you couldn’t get what you wanted when the truth was you didn’t put forth the effort or the plan.  No excuses!

From there of course you will have to network, build your online resume, your own personal brand, stand out from the competition, take a Toastmasters speaking class to hone your interview skills, so on and so forth.  Nothing that is easy but it can’t even get to that point if you don’t start by setting these types of goals to get you in your chosen job/career path!

If you do all of these and know what you are gunning for you will be staring at that first paycheck getting direct deposit into your checking account in no time!

Good Luck and CARPE DIEM ALL!  Thanks so much for taking the time to read this article, I truly hope it helps you get where you want to.  If myself or anyone at SportsNetworker can be of any help please leave your comments below, TWEET us http://twitter.com/sportsnetworker, or you can email me at [email protected] with any additional questions or processes you would like to run by us.
