Lance Armstrong Gives Up Fight Against USADA Charges

Lance ArmstrongLance Armstrong is giving up his fight against the latest wave of charges by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency , which will likely rule that the seven-time Tour de France winner should be banned from cycling for life and stripped of his titles.Armstrong, who never tested positive during his career, has denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Before retiring last year, the cyclist won the sport’s ultimate contest from 1999 to 2005.

“There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ For me, that time is now,” Armstrong said in a statement released on his website. “I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999. The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today — finished with this nonsense.”

Best Quarterbacks For Your Buck

The NFL road hasn’t been an entirely smooth one for Miami Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cowboys out of Oregon State in 2007, Moore was waived near the end of his first training camp. Picked up by the Carolina Panthers, he spent three of the next four years sharing playing time with the likes of Vinny Testeverde, Jake Delhomme and Jimmy Clausen (Moore missed the entire 2008 season with a broken left fibula).

But the 2011 season brought Moore his real first chance. With the Panthers clearing room for top draft pick Cam Newton, Moore signed with Miami, where he started 13 games, the most of his career. While he didn’t quite set the league on fire, Moore’s  2,497 passing yards, 16 touchdown passes and solid 87.1 quarterback rating won him the honor of team MVP.

How To Plan A Sports Networking Event

Sports NetworkingAttending sports networking events has been a hobby of mine ever since I realized that I wanted to work in sports. There is something about connecting with like-minded peers that gets me excited about my future in this business. As much as I enjoy seeing sports business professionals speak and beginning relationships with passionate people, I never really thought much about all the hard work that goes into planning a networking event.

That was until I decided to put together a gathering of my own in one of the most popular sports capitals in the world, New York. Below are the basic steps I followed in order to plan an event from start to finish:

Luck Is Behind RGIII In Marketing, And That’s Fine With Him

Andrew Luck In one area, and one area alone, Andrew Luck has lagged badly behind Washington’s Robert Griffin III. And he’s done so quite willingly. While RGIII is already a marketing star who’s done TV spots for Subway, adidas and others, Luck has done very little, and certainly nothing of a national TV scope.

Understand, there is no right or wrong way to do this. Indy fans will surely say, “See, our guy understands he hasn’t done anything yet on an NFL field and is concentrating solely on football.” Washington fans will surely say, “Our guy is an electric presence and everything he’s done has been before the start of training camp.”

University Of Kentucky, Louisville Monitor Athletes’ Tweets

Student athletes at the University of Kentucky and most at the University of Louisville surrender their online privacy to their coaches under a social media monitoring system used by both schools, as well as others across the country.

As a condition of participating in sports, the schools require athletes to agree to monitoring software being placed on their social media accounts. This software emails alerts to coaches whenever athletes use a word that could embarrass the student, the university or tarnish their images on services such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and MySpace.

The University of Louisville flags 406 words or slang expressions that have to do with drugs, sex, or alcohol. The University of Kentucky flags a similar number, of which 370 are sports agents’ names.

Time Warner Last Major Provider Still Not Part Of NFL Network

Time WarnerLast Friday, Cablevision started beaming the NFL Network to about half its three million subscribers. The subscriber’s deal leaves Time Warner Cable as the last major cable operator to not carry the NFL Network. Time Warner Cable executives have viewed the channel as too costly and believed that whatever value it has rests entirely in the N.F.L. games it carries, not in its other programming.

“Unfortunately, we’re nowhere with them,” said Steve Bornstein, president of the NFL Network. “We’ve had no productive conversations with them in months.” He said the Cablevision deal “certainly isolates” Time Warner, but he did not sound hopeful that it would restart negotiations.

How Technology Will Evolve By 2016 Olympics

Rio 2016The 2012 London Olympic Games provided one of the most connected global experiences ever. Myriad streams of content were available on TV and online, not to mention on multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets and desktop computers. But the world isn’t finished innovating and creating new ways to enhance the viewing experience for future large-scale sporting events, such as the Olympics and the World Cup.

In the past, TV networks covering the Olympics delivered only prime-time evening coverage of what happened that day, with taped highlights of various events tightly packaged into several hours of programming. That approach changed dramatically with the 2008 Beijing Olympics when NBCUniversal, the provider of Olympics coverage for American audiences, offered not only hours of TV and cable coverage but also thousands of hours of coverage online at NBCOlympics.com.
