Will,

Thanks for the response. I believe you are correct that our fans and public have also been behind the US in terms of adapting to social media.

However, the UK is now second to only the US in terms of Twitter usage and London is now the top Twitter using city.

The market is definitely there and I beleieve its only a matter of time until our athletes and teams start to utilise social media.

Thanks again for your comment!

Good post Ash, with some good points made.

I do feel, however, that you have failed to identify one key idea. Not only are our professional athletes here in the UK uneducated on the powers of social media, but so are the fans and general public as a whole. We, like most of Europe, are certainly along way behind our American cousins in terms of embracing digital marketing initiatives, so only now do I feel that it has become worthwhile for sports pro's to utilise the new media platforms available.

I feel social media in sport has a great potential to grow here the UK, but believe we should be looking closely at the North American industry's developments in order to pick-up on developments faster and stay one step ahead of the game.

[...] Again, this highlights the need for our clubs and athletes to be given social media training, social media is something that should be embraced by athletes and clubs alike, not something we only here about in controversial situations. This is a subject I covered in my recent sports networker article, Twitter and the Premier League. [...]
